Dalí and Disney

11 December 2009 3 Comments

I feel like a lot people really don’t give Walt credit for his innovation in so many areas of art and life.  Here’s one more example of his passion for art and innovation : Destino.  You can watch the embedded 4:3 version, or I recommend you click here to see it in the original 16:9 format.

Destino by W.Disney&S.Dali from Christie on Vimeo.

The film was storyboarded by Dalí and Disney for eight months in 1945-6, but Disney Studio’s was in a financial crunch, and the budget ran out.  Later, 18 seconds of the film were animated by the lead animator in hopes of resurrecting the project, but to no avail.  (These 18 seconds do appear in the final version of the film between 5:20 and 5:38).

In 1999, Roy Disney commissioned Disney’s Paris Animation Studio to revive the project and finish it using the original story boards.  Destino premiered on June 2, 2003 at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in Annecy, France.

Thank you for sharing this! I absolutely love it. The animation has got to be the most beautiful Disney's ever created. Is it because it was done in France?? hmm…either way, I love it.

I also just talked to a friend about how long I've been wanting Disney to release more musical animation films like they used to. I could understand that maybe it wouldn't sell as well and such, but still, I wanted more. I was excited to see The Princess and the Frog until I watched the trailer. It looks kind of awful.

They have so much talent, for sure, and I love when they're brave enough to step outside the consumer box.

I miss this kind of thinking, even the echoes of Walt are better than the company's feature productions these days (I'm looking at you Pirates of the Crappibean 3)
